Govt. of India introduced the National Medical Commission Act'19 through official Gazette, dated 8th Aug 2019, duly signed by Honourable President of India . As a part of implementation of the NMC Act, Medical Council of India (MCI) is replaced by National Medical Commission or NMC with effect from 25th September 2020.
With the authority of regulating medical education in India NMC henceforth becomes the regulator for awarding license for practicing medicine in India.
NMC, therefore, is replacing Foreign Medical Graduate Entrance Exam (FMGE, or foreign medical students screening test) and NEET-PG of MCI with national-level exit exam named as National Exit Test (NEXT). Govt. of India notification states to start NEXT within three years from the date of commencement of the NMC Act, i.e. from 2022 for all final year medical students, be from Indian Government Medical Colleges/ Universities, be from Indian Private Medical Colleges/ Universities, or be from Foreign Medical Colleges/ Universities.
NEXT, therefore, will be a common licentiate examination for all students from Indian or Foreign Universities, for granting licenses to practice medicine as medical practitioners and for enrolment in the State Register or the National Register, or to pursue Post Graduate Education in Indian Medical Institutes.
That means unless a medical student clears NEXT he will no more be given license to practice medicine or pursue higher studies in medical education in India.
With the introduction of NMC Act 2019 and NEXT, it becomes a call of the time to join Foreign Medical Universities rather to spend hefty money in Indian Private Medical Colleges.
